DRIVER LICENCE NUMBER REQUIREMENT

NEW DRIVER LICENCE NUMBER REQUIREMENT

Following a change in legislation, from 31 March 2025 anyone wishing to buy or renew their motor insurance must provide the Driver Number for any named drivers on their policy.

After that date it will be an offence for any insurer or broker to provide motor insurance in Ireland to anyone who does not provide that information.

Many insurers have already begun collecting this legally required information.

All insurers and brokers will have to ensure they follow this step for all motor insurance policies issued from 31 March 2025. After that date they will be legally forbidden from issuing insurance to anyone who does not provide the necessary Driver Number information.

What is a Driver Number?

Every motorist has their own unique Driver Number which stays with them regardless of the vehicle they are using.

You can find your driver number under section 4(d) on your Driving Licence.

Your unique Driver Number does not change and stays with you for all your life.

Why is this this needed?

This measure was included in the Road Traffic and Roads Act 2023 and is aimed at enhancing road safety.

This information will be added to the Irish Motor Insurance Database (IMID), which supports An Garda Síochána in their roads’ policing. This database already shows what insurance policies are in place for 3 million vehicles in Ireland and who the insured drivers are.

It is updated daily.

The addition of the Driver Number – tied to each specific driver – provides An Garda Síochána with a more comprehensive insight into any offences a driver may have committed, making it even more difficult for drivers who act illegally on Irish roads to evade detection.

How do I provide my Driver Number to my insurer?

Your insurer will request this information from you when you next renew your motor insurance policy.

If you have any questions about this legal requirement to provide your Driver Number you can contact your insurance provider and they will be able to provide further assistance.
